The unthinkable has happened (worse than being asked to choose between your children, or friends, or parents, or pets... whatever, you name it).

You are put on the spot and are being asked to pick one song (yes, only one) that personifies the Grateful Dead to you.

What's your choice to be...?

StSt.

Any pre 72 version. 9-19-70 is good...I'd use 6-14-68 if sound quality were better.

China/Rider (if that's one), otherwise I'll go for Rider.
"I wish I was a headlight..." often is THE moment in a show for me (of course there are many others as well).

Darkstar and a close second would have to be a good 73-74 Eyes of the World.

If I was choosing studio Dead, I'd give Box of Rain some very serious consideration.

Believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare...

I would choose ripple. It is a very tough choice though, there are so many. Of the newer ones I would choose Days Between. You can't really go wrong with whatever you pick. "If I knew the way, I would take you home."

"Uncle John's Band"

It works so well so many ways- as a sweet accoustic treat, as an energetic crowd pleaser, or as a vehicle for jamming out.

Samba?

No, I have to say for me Bird Song. I'm also partial to The Wheel, though I know that this was technically a JG song.

Have to agree with you there. I would also throw in the other "Band" song, Playin'. Powerful and an amazing vehicle for some of the best jams the band ever produced. Maybe why the songs were so often combined into one huge feel-good, jam-fest.

I'd have to say Dark Star. To me it embodies the whole jazzy, spacey improv thing that the Dead did like no other.

Good point. Though I love the lyrics of CE, Jerry often had a difficult time singing it well.

To pick the one Other One, sans CE, I would of course suggest...(you all know it, right?).

My work is done here, but it'll come up again.
